My revision process took longer than my drafting process because this time, I was very intentional about everything I did. My first draft was on paper, so making the second draft on LucidChart took a lot longer but it makes the map look significantly better and more put together. In my first draft, I added elements as I thought of them, so there wasn’t really any reason behind where thing were placed on the map; I put them wherever there was space. This time, I paid a lot more attention to the way it looked, being careful about where I placed things so it made sense and hopefully doesn’t look too cluttered. I also thought more about what new things should be included or which parts of my first draft weren’t working very well and should be removed. I did the revision is my room and it took about an hour and a half.
I felt more stressed revising to make the second draft, because I felt more pressure to make sure that it is improving and that it is a significant change from the first draft and not just slightly better. Also, using LucidChart was harder than doing it on paper because it was more challenging for me to get what I envisioned in my head onto the page. It took me a while to figure out how to work LucidChart as well, but eventually I started figuring it out and it became a lot easier to manage. Although it was more stressful for me to write the second draft, I am happier with the result. I was very invested in making my revisions good and making a second draft that is as close to a final draft as I can have it without feedback yet. For me, this revision process went pretty smoothly.
Edit: After getting the feedback from the workshops in class, I further revised my map. I added an element that had been missing. Also, I clarified some parts that confused some people who reviewed my map. As well as changing things due to the peer review, I also made many design changes after our class on visual rhetoric and the CRAP design principles. I added in more contrast to emphasize the most important parts and make the map clearer. I also rearranged the proximity of bubbles and changed to more complementary colors to show the connection between related elements. This revision took about an hour and a half, and made me a lot happier with the clarity and aesthetics of my map.
I totally feel where you are coming from within this process. At first I was kind of on my own I did not completely understand if I was doing everything right, but after the lecture on visual rhetoric and workshops I feel so much better. The CRAP principles really make you think about why you made things the way you did, but I feel this helped me to organize my map and make it fun and different.
